SLEEP TESTING
 for those ON THE MOVE

What's all the fuss about??

Picture
In the interest of public safety, government regulators have developed requirements for screening Commercial Operators for a potentially dangerous Sleep Disorder called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).  Particularly of concern for Commercial Operators, OSA can lead to excessive drowsiness and increased risk of accidents.  OSA can also be a debilitating condition with significant long term health complications such as Hypertension (High Blood Pressure), increased risk of Heart Attack, Stroke, cognitive impairment, erectile dysfunction - and even increased risks of developing cancer.   The consistent lack of refreshing sleep also robs you of energy, and negatively impacts your overall quality of life.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have implemented screening criteria for medical examiner reference that have been incorporated into the Medical approval process.  Several criteria to "Screen" Medical Exam Applicants for OSA are referenced including a measurement called Body Mass Index (BMI), neck circumference and assessments of daytime sleepiness.  A high BMI (>30) will likely trigger a need to be screened, regardless of other symptoms, as studies have shown that the likelihood of having OSA increases significantly with an increase in BMI.  (Reference the BMI Chart to the right to see if this impacts you).  Many other symptoms however may indicate a Sleep Disorder, outside of BMI, that are in your best interest to assess and address.

Do you snore?
Has anyone ever told you you stop breathing at night?

While snoring is typically considered a social issue, if it can be described as "Loud, Disruptive Snoring" it is often a sign that you may suffer with OSA.  OSA also typically results in people being tired, more so than would be considered normal, and can lead to increased blood pressure (hypertension) and other serious conditions.  OSA is also often present in people that are overweight and older.  The highest demographic profile correlates in many parameters to that of professional Truck Drivers and commercial vehicle operators of all types..

OSA occurs when your airway narrows and obstructs during sleep for periods of more than 10 seconds.  This causes your blood oxygen level to drop, resulting in oxygen deprivation to your cardiovascular system and fractured sleep while your body increases its level of consciousness to reestablish breathing.  This can happen dozens of times and hour and hundred of times a night.
